Damaged baseball card featuring Honus Wagner an athlete whose likeness appears on some of the priciest baseball cards on earth was auctioned  for $1.5 million, despite the condition of the card.

The Wagner card attracted at least 75 bids starting at $100,000 at the New Jersey-based Robert Edward Auctions auction, according to which the winner remains anonymous.

The card was authenticated by Professional Sports Authenticators as Authentic - Altered, the company's lowest destination for memorabilia that is genuine but shows signs of alteration or wear.

Wagner cards featuring Honus Wagner are still scarce years after their production. Only six inches of six Wagner cards are known to exist

Honus Wagner Card were mass produced by the American Tobacco Company to sell with cigarettes as a marketing strategy. As a result, the cards routinely bring in seven-figure prices at auction.

These cards were eventually taken out of circulation shortly after Wagner's death by himself, becoming even scarcer in the following decades

Last year, a T206 Honus Wagner baseball card sold for a whopping $6.6 million. The record was previously held by a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card that had sold for $5.2 million in 2021.

Among the most famous baseball players of all time, Wagner is reportedly the best shortstop ever. He still holds the National League record for having the most seasons in the lineup.
